Invasion

Another of the events we attended for our Canada 150 celebrations was a spectacular theatrical presentation put on by a French company called La Machine. They use giant animatronic beasts to play out a story in your city. They were here in Ottawa and over three days played out the story of a Horse Dragon named Long Ma and a spider named Kuma. Kuma had stolen and hidden Long Ma's wings. Long Ma searched all over for her wings and when she and Kuma met there were battles to be seen.

We went down on the second night that the spectacle was on. First we went to Kontinuum , a multi-media show in one of the new subway tunnels. Then we headed over to where we would see Kuma at the Supreme Court. She was sleeping so we headed up the street to see Long Ma come looking for her wings.

Long Ma came down Wellington Street, eating plants as she went. At first we able to keep ahead of the crowds and stay in front but some of our group got caught out at the side and we had to wait for them that put us too far behind the front of the crowds. We got caught way back and couldn't get back down to where the night's spectacle could be seen.

It was still exciting to see even though being in such a large crowd was a little scary. People were all really in a good mood but had there been any kind of incident I don't know how emergency crews would have gotten in, it was so jam packed. We decided to leave and tried to head for the intersection ahead but were told by some people they had tried for 10 minutes and couldn't get there. We turned around and pushed through the crowds to make our way back to the last intersection we had passed.

The crowds were so large on this night that they moved the location for the last night's spectacle so that people wouldn't be so crammed into the street and would have a better chance of seeing the show.

MosiaCanada 150

Yesterday I went down to an event being held in Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau, Quebec. Unfortunately this event was not dog-friendly so Beckett and Keltic had to stay home. The event was MosiaCanada 150 and is a display of sculptures all covered with plant material.

I almost didn't go. I set my GPS for Jacques Cartier park and it got me there after a fashion even though it tried to turn me left twice where there was no left turn allowed. We get to the park and the police were there with the roads blocked off because of the crowds of people. I was in the wrong lane and ended up back on another bridge back to the Ottawa side of the river. At this point I thought I might as well go home and try another day but while trying to get out of the downtown core I decided to park in a parking garage and walk back to MosiaCanada.

Walking back across the Alexandria Bridge I could see dark clouds to the west and again I nearly turned back but decided to keep going and hoped if there was rain it wouldn't be too bad. We've had a really wet spring and summer so far this year.

I got to Jacques Cartier Park and there was a long line up to get in. It seemed to be moving quickly so I got in line. I figured if it took too long I could just leave. It did move quickly and it was just for a security check of everyone's backpacks or bags; just a sign of the times we live in. Once inside, although there were lots of people, it didn't seem that crowded.

The sculptures were set out in two connecting loops. Each of the sculptures was sponsored by a province, city or other group. I went around twice, the first time around I went quickly as it was still threatening rain. And it did rain, so I took cover, as did many other people, under the grand piano. I think it was the only sculpture I didn't get a picture of. We got kicked out from under the piano but not until the rain had mostly stopped. By then it was clearing so I went around again this time reading more about many of the sculptures.

After the second time around, it was getting rather late and I still had the walk back so I headed back across the bridge to Ottawa.

By now it had cleared up nicely and it was actually rather warm out. I got home later in the afternoon than I had planned and my Achilles was a little sore so I didn't get the lawn mowed. MosiaCanada is running until October so if you're thinking about a visit to our capital, it's certainly a sight you have to see. It's free; just be prepared for some walking to get there if you go on a weekend.

Happy Canada Day!!

It's our sesquicentennial, our country is 150 years old!

Beckett and Keltic went to Parliament Hill to celebrate. They are wearing Canada 150 bandanas but they are really hard to see.

We got a better shot with our Canada 150 tulips.

Agility Blessing

May the tunnels not have too much suction,
May the course be fun and fast.
May your dog not stop to say "hello" to the photographers they pass!
May the table not be too slippery,
May the chute house no scary beasts,
May all the yellow parts be touched with one little toe, at least
May the wind be always at your back,
May no bars fall on the ground,
May the A-frame have no stop sign on the top,

What is a Title!

Not just a brag, not just a stepping stone to a higher title, not just an adjunct to competitive scores. A Title is a tribute to the dog that bears it, a way to honor that dog, an ultimate memorial. It will remain in the record and in the memory for about as long as anything in this world can remain. Few humans will do as well or better in that regard, and though the dog himself doesn't know or care that his achievements have been noted, a Title says many things in the world of humans, where such things count.

A Title says your dog was intelligent, and adaptable, and good natured. It says that your dog loved you enough to do the things that please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed. And a Title says that you loved your dog, that you loved to spend time with him because he was a good dog, and that you believed in him enough to give him yet another chance when he failed, and that in the end your faith was justified.

A Title proves that your dog inspired you to have the special relationship enjoyed by so few, that in the world of disposable creatures, this dog with a Title was greatly loved, and loved greatly in return. And when that dear short life is over, the Title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deserving friend, volumes of praise in one small set of initials before or after the name.

A Title is nothing less than love and respect, given and received, permanently recorded.

The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak

Beyond the Rainbow

As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played,

I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade.

I saw a wondrous image then of a place that’s trouble-free,

Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity.

I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side

Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be!

My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new

I wanted to run with them, but I had something left to do.

I needed to reach out to you, and tell you I’m alright

That this place is truly wonderful,

Then a bright Glow pierced the night.

Twas the Glow of many candles shining bright, strong and bold

The Price We Pay

There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals.

It is a cycle unlike any other.

To those who have never lived through it's turnings and walked it's rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with the full knowledge it will be broken seems incomprehensible.

Only we know how small price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given.
