Albert

So, another Christmas has come and gone, but I have to do one last post about the season and that's about my tree, Albert. He didn't particularly grab my attention. I always look for a tree with a nice top and a fairly thick trunk. I try to find one that also has a relatively straight trunk, which Albert doesn't have. He has a bend in his trunk which meant that getting him to look like he was standing straight could be tough. But having looked at most of the other trees on the lot, I decided on Albert, although he wasn't Albert then.

Last year for the first time, I named my Christmas tree. Last year, one of the friends that helped decorate came up with the name, Gaston. All this past year, I thought this year's tree would be Friedrich; but somehow that didn't seem to suit this tree. I was out running errands one day after bringing him home when the name came to me, Albert. And so, Albert he became, and it suited him.

As you can see in this picture, Albert leans somewhat but I assure you, he is standing straight in the tree stand. The slight bend to the left is at the bottom of his trunk just above the stand. You can also see that he has a bit of a bare spot to one side too but since the tree goes into a corner that's sometimes an advantage. Standing in the corner, Albert stood straight and tall but viewed from the dining room, you can see that he leans into his work.

Again, this year, I had friends come over to decorate; it makes things go so much quicker. I love to reminisce about the decorations. I have ones my parents gave to me, ones from family and friends, ones from places I've traveled to, ones for each of my dogs and some I gave to my parents that have now returned to me.

Ode to Albert

The best place in the house to see the tree is sitting on the stairs. I often put music on before going to bed and just sit and watch the lights. It brings back lots of Christmas memories.

Despite his imperfections, or maybe because of them, Albert was a beautiful Christmas tree. It's always hard to take down the ornaments and put the tree outside. Albert got to stick around for a while as he missed his ride the first time, so he hung out by the porch for a week.

Christmas Memories

I suppose it is the memories of Christmas past that make us either happy or sad at this time of year. I know for me, they make me both happy and sad, well maybe not sad but nostalgic.

One of the memories I have of Christmas is of my mother baking Christmas sweets to enjoy. I don't know how she did it, with six kids and, for a lot of the time, she was also working. There was always plenty of sweets to eat at Christmas time, shortbread, fruit cake, sugar cookies, cherry nut loaf, date and nut loaf, and of course, mincemeat pie. I don't know where she found the time; baking one batch of cookies takes me all afternoon. This year I did make shortbread cookies, an orange cranberry loaf and a cherry nut loaf.

My parents also used to make Acadian meat pies every Christmas. I did a blog post about Christmas meat pies last year. We grew up calling them tourtieres. Meat pies always bring back memories of going to Midnight Mass then coming home to have meat pie, some sweets and opening one gift before heading to bed, as a child that was such a magical time. I made meat pies again this year.

But I think the most Christmas memories come when I decorate my Christmas tree; this year I called him Albert. I see pictures of other people's tree and they look stunning like they should be in a magazine. Some people I know even occasionally change the theme of their tree, so I don't know if their tree holds as many memories. Many of the ornaments on my tree hold special memories for me and even though it may not look like a tree from a fashion magazine, it is still beautiful. There are ornaments my parents gave to me. One from the US Air Force Academy; it is an ornament depicting the Academy Chapel. I had drawn that chapel as part of a grade school math project so when they traveled out west many years later, it was souvenir they thought to buy for me.

I have ornaments that I bought for my parents that with their passing have returned to me. They make me a little sad but also bring my parents closer to me.

I'm sure other people have ornaments in their tree that bring back many happy memories as many of mine do, so here's to all the memories!

Oh Christmas Tree!

So earlier this week I got my Christmas Tree and I decorated it yesterday. Each year when I decorate my tree I think of the many family and friends that I have spent time with over the holidays.

Each of my dogs has an ornament on the tree. This year, Beckett has an angel on the tree too. A surprise gift from a friend after Beckett had passed. I can tell you I cried when I opened it. It was the first ornament that I put on the tree this year.

I put my other fur angel ornament up in behind the Beckett angel. If you can't read it; it says "My angel has four legs and fur".

I had to add two ornaments for the new additions to the pack, Teddy and Liam. I also decided to get one for me, too. I think they'd say it was true, even if I have to say so myself.

As I said there are many memories on the tree but especially of my mum and dad. There are ornaments that they gave me and ones that I had given to them that now adorn my tree. These two birds were stocking stuffers I gave them one year. Funnily, the red cardinal is the one for Mother with Love and the other bird's tag says to a Special Dad. You'd would have thought that they would have made the male cardinal an ornament to a dad.

There are many ornaments that are ones my parents gave to me. The little squirrel in the acorn they gave to me after I bought my second house. The Air Force Academy one, they brought back for me from their trip to Western US, including Colorado. I had drawn a picture of the Academy Chapel shown in the ornament in Grade 7 as part of an assignment in math class. The glass ornament is from a set of four. They bought them for me at the World's Largest Christmas store in Frankenmuth, Michigan. It's getting harder to find nice glass ornaments like them any more.

I did get one other new ornament this year. This one I bought from Etsy, supporting a local crafter here in Ontario. I think it's very appropriate for 2020. Hope you can read it!

After all the ornaments are put on the tree, I use Victorian tinsel to fill up bare spaces and add a little bit of glitter to the tree. The final touch is to place my snowmen at the base of the tree. And there you have it, my Christmas tree for 2020 with all it's Christmas Tree treasures and memories! It's beautiful, even in this pandemic year.

Agility Blessing

May the tunnels not have too much suction,

What is a Title!

Not just a brag, not just a stepping stone to a higher title, not just an adjunct to competitive scores. A Title is a tribute to the dog that bears it, a way to honor that dog, an ultimate memorial. It will remain in the record and in the memory for about as long as anything in this world can remain. Few humans will do as well or better in that regard, and though the dog himself doesn't know or care that his achievements have been noted, a Title says many things in the world of humans, where such things count.

A Title says your dog was intelligent, and adaptable, and good natured. It says that your dog loved you enough to do the things that please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed. And a Title says that you loved your dog, that you loved to spend time with him because he was a good dog, and that you believed in him enough to give him yet another chance when he failed, and that in the end your faith was justified.

A Title proves that your dog inspired you to have the special relationship enjoyed by so few, that in the world of disposable creatures, this dog with a Title was greatly loved, and loved greatly in return. And when that dear short life is over, the Title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deserving friend, volumes of praise in one small set of initials before or after the name.

A Title is nothing less than love and respect, given and received, permanently recorded.

The Last Battle

Beyond the Rainbow

As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played,

I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade.

I saw a wondrous image then of a place that’s trouble-free,

Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity.

I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side

Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be!

My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new

I wanted to run with them, but I had something left to do.

The Price We Pay

There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals.

It is a cycle unlike any other.

To those who have never lived through it's turnings and walked it's rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with the full knowledge it will be broken seems incomprehensible.

Only we know how small price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given.
