First trial - First Q's

Yesterday, Teddy was entered in his very first agility competition. I wasn't going to enter him in any competitions this fall but recently one of the trial hosts decided not to do any indoor trials until things improved with COVID so when I saw this Jumpers trial hosted by the Ottawa Valley Border Collie Club I decided to give it a go.

I hadn't been to this agility venue, Dogz, for quite some time. I looked up the directions on my tablet and it said it was about a 50 minute drive (it probably is in traffic) so I planned to leave at 7 am. When I put the address in my car's GPS on Saturday morning, it gave me an estimated time of only about 30 minutes. Needless to say I was the first one there and had lots of time to set up and walk the dogs.  It was a glorious day for agility, cool but not cold with just a light breeze.

Our morning view
I knew there would be people there that I knew and so I hoped that I would be able to get someone to video Teddy's very first runs. Luckily, a friend who was running her dogs in later events, arrived early and she was able to video for me. It's always easier when someone isn't worried about their dog's run. It was my first competition in 2021, my last competitions were with Keltic last Sep, hopefully it won't be another year before we can do another competition.

Teddy did great. I was really rusty in the first run and it wasn't a nice flowing Starter's course. I thought I caused Teddy to fault the first tunnel and one of the jumps but apparently since he didn't have any backward motion (Sheltie spins are backward motion) he wasn't faulted.

Starter Jumpers 1

Teddy isn't the fastest Sheltie out there but it seems like he'll be a steady agility partner,  like Tucker, he'll probably rack up the qualifying scores once he can run as a Veteran dog.

Starter Jumpers 2

Teddy - Starter Jumpers 2 Video

The second run was much smoother for us. I got in all the crosses I had planned unlike in the first run. Teddy ran in one more event, the Steeplechase. He's only seen the A-frame in class once so I wasn't sure what he'd do. He did it alright but he stopped in the yellow, when I asked him to target he jumped off then got right back on again so we were eliminated. He did do all 12 of the the weaves though and didn't knock a single bar.

With the two Starter Q's (qualifying scores) in Jumpers, Teddy now moves to Advanced in that event. So with good weather, a chance to see friends and play some agility; I'd say that all in all it was a pretty good day.

RPod Adventures - Parks of the St Lawrence - Glengarry

Last week, my youngest sister, her husband and I went camping at Glengarry campground just outside of Lancaster, Ontario.  This is another of the parks on the St Lawrence but this one is not on an island on the Long Sault Parkway rather it is a little further east and right on the St Lawrence river.  The view across the river is not of New York state because the river bends and the border doesn't just follow the river, it is the province of Quebec.

I arrived first, registered and drove down to the campsites.  I had received a text message from my sister and they were very close to arriving too.  I looked at our two sites and thought it would be easier for me to back into theirs and that way I would be facing their site. I tried to back in but was too far forward and was going to hit the site post, so I decided to drive around the loop and try again. I saw my sister and her husband arriving just as I pulled out. As I drove around the loop I decided, what the heck, and just pulled through the site behind mine that was empty at the time rather than trying to back in.  So much easier, although I'm sure I could have backed in had I tried again.

My site at Glengarry (#50)

The view behind my site.

Liam at my sister's site, you can just see my trailer.

The beach in the day use area was closed and campground was pretty empty, most of the unserviced sites were not being used although there were a few hardy tent campers; most of the people camping were seasonal campers or transients just passing through. That made the campground fairly quiet except for when they mowed the lawn which seemed to be a daily occurrence. The campground is near the highway and the train tracks, the highway noise just becomes white noise and I only really noticed the trains the first night.

On our second day, we drove out the see the St Raphael Ruins and the Martintown Grist mill. The St Raphael Ruins haven't really been ruins all that long, the church burned down in 1970 and the walls were stabilized in 1974.  The church was built by Scottish immigrants to Canada in 1821. It was the second church built on the site, the first just being small chapel. There is a new church attached to the wall of the ruins on the far side and it is still is an active parish. The ruins are now a National Historic site.

The ruins are free to visit, donations are appreciated, and are dog friendly. The Martintown grist mill is on the same road, about 15 kilometers from the church. Unfortunately for us, the grist mill is only open weekdays until Labour Day, then it's only open weekends until end Oct.

The next day we had some rain so after a late breakfast we drove into Lancaster to a gift shop. The gift shop had a number of different buildings that you could wander through, by the time we were finished shopping it had stopped raining. The old couple on the bench and lamp post were actually for sale.

The next day we went to a local cheese shop, they aren't doing tours or giving out samples right now due to COVID but they were still open, We bought some cheeses, chutney and red pepper jelly that we had as an appetizer before dinner.

My sister and I also walked over to the Anglican Church whose property the campground surrounds. You can see the church right from the campground but it is fenced off so you have to walk back out to the service road to go see it, except on Sundays when they open a gate to allow campers to join them at Sunday Service.

There were no long hikes on this trip just walks through the campground but I don't think the dogs minded. They did get to go on the day trips and only had to stay in the car while we shopped. Liam is getting better at being left on the camp site although once I had to put him in the car while I was making his dinner, he has no patience at all when he knows food is coming.

Rockett on the St Lawrence

We were lucky with weather with only the one day with rain and the temperatures were perfect too.  You needed a fleece in the evenings but during the day you could have worn shorts. We have one more trip planned before the 2021 camping season ends. The trip home was pretty uneventful. I did have a small accident but we don't cry over spilt milk. I travel with 1 litre cartons of milk and cream as they have a plastic screw on cap and they lay in the fridge on their sides. Well, I guess I didn't close the cap tightly as there was milk all over the fridge and floor of the trailer. Really, I had planned to wash the floor in the trailer anyway.

Another RPod Adventure

Last week we went to another of the St Lawrence Parks campgrounds, this time we were at Mille Roches (thousand rocks). It's at the other end of the Long Sault Parkway from the first two we've stayed at.

My site wasn't the greatest, it was pretty open, next to a maintenance building and right on the road, if I had backed into the site my firepit would have been behind the trailer and so would have the picnic table (but I could have moved that); so I decided to just park the trailer on the site parallel to the road.  That way I had privacy especially with the RDome and my view was of the tree line or some other campsites down the road.

My youngest sister and her husband had the large corner site next to me. It was a decent site even though it was on a corner. It was shaded and had trees that made tarping the firepit easy.  The tarp provides extra shade and protection from any rain. We didn't get any rain this trip but it was stinking hot and humid. My other sister and her husband were across the road just down from me.

Looking toward J&J's trailer

Looking the other way to M&S's site and the bathhouse.

This campground is on two islands connected by a causeway, we were on the first island, the second island only has unserviced sites and single service 15 amp sites and while it has two washrooms all the showers for the campground were in a building near to where we were camped.

One day I drove to Cornwall to walk the trail by the old canal.  There was no shade on the canal and no breeze either. I think we might have walked a kilometer before turning around and heading back.

While there wasn't a beach in the campground, many of the unserviced sites are on the water. I walked around the campground to see if any of them had a spot where I could take the dogs swimming and was lucky to find a nice little spot not too far from our campsites that wasn't even a campsite where I could take them.  I took them swimming three times. I'm sure Liam thought I was trying to drown him. The second and third time I took them swimming I took each of them out individually so I could use two hands to help Liam. I would hold the back handle on his lifejacket until he stopped trying to climb out of the water, then I would let him swim back in.  I think he was getting the idea. Teddy actually swims rather well with those skinny legs of his.

We were at the campground from Monday to Friday. There was a forecast for rain for the Wednesday, but every day it kept getting pushed back and we had no rain while we were there. The heat wave finally broke Thursday evening and we were able to pack up on Friday in cooler weather. We again enjoyed some great meals, beautiful sunsets and, while we didn't need them for heat, campfires.

Butter Chicken Pizza

My youngest sister, her husband and I have another camping trip planned for next week. It's to another of the St Lawrence Park campgrounds but this one is not on the parkway. I'm sure it won't be as hot as already you can feel fall in the air.
