Let Me Drink Your Blood

One of the reasons I wanted to do this river cruise itinerary was because it went to Transylvania and Bran Castle, also known as Dracula's Castle. I knew that Vlad Tepes or Vlad the Impaler was very different from Dracula but it was very interesting to hear the real history and how perhaps Bram Stoker came up with the idea for the blood sucking vampire.

Since we started late and hit a lot of traffic our schedule for the day was revised. We were to visit Peles Castle and have a walking tour of Old Town Brasov on our arrival in Brasov but as we were so late arriving in Brasov the walking tour was rescheduled for the next morning. Amawaterways is very good at resolving any issue that comes up.

Peles Castle was the summer home of King Carol I of Romania. On the way, we stopped for lunch in the lovely town of Sinaia. We had a nice pizza lunch and spent our free time walking the main street, then it was back on the bus to finish the journey to the castle.

Peles Castle was taken from the Romanian Royal Family when the Communists took over and it was made into a museum. It has since been returned to the Royal Family but still operates as a museum. The Royal Family only uses it for special occasions.

Then we boarded the bus for the final stage of the journey to Brasov. As we arrived late, the hotel kindly opened all their dining rooms so that we could have dinner there. There were almost 80 people on this pre cruise. We stayed at the Kronwell Hotel in Brasov which is out by the main train station.

The next morning, we did a walking tour of the Old Town in Brasov before heading to the walled fortress town of Sighisoara. Another reason, our walking tour was delayed was that there was a weekend music festival being held in the town square.

Sighisoara is a UNESCO World Heritage site and it is the birthplace of Vlad Tepes. The house that he was born in is now a restaurant. They do have a sign outside but if you want to go in you need to either pay or eat at the restaurant. Vlad's father and grandfather were members of the Order of the Dragon (or Dracul in medieval Romanian). Vald's father was known as Vlad Dracul. Dracula literally means son of the Dragon and Vlad Tepes called himself Dracula.

After lunch in Sighisoara, we boarded our buses again to return to Brasov. We got back to Brasov mid afternoon and were offered the opportunity to be dropped off in the Old Town for some free time or to go directly back to the hotel. Only a few of us opted to stay in town. I think the others missed out as we had a wonderful time exploring the Old Town on our own. One of the places we went back to was the smallest street in Brasov. It had been crowded with tourists during our walking tour.

We had a lovely dinner after finding a restaurant that had salads so that my sister and I could have Romanian donuts for dessert before we headed back to the hotel using local transit.

The next morning, we would depart Brasov for the port of Girgiu to embark on our Danube River cruise but on the way we would stop at Bran Castle. The funny thing about Bran Castle is that Vlad Tepes never lived there. It belonged to his grandfather for some time when Vlad was a boy so he undoubtably visited the castle.

But what we learned from our guide Walter was that Bram Stoker probably combined the stories of Vlad the Impaler with those of a countess from Hungary who believed bathing in the blood of virgins would give her eternal live to come up with his vampire, Dracula.

After our visit to the castle, we departed to embark on our Danube River cruise aboard the Amaverde.

Agility Blessing

May the tunnels not have too much suction,
May the course be fun and fast.

What is a Title!

Not just a brag, not just a stepping stone to a higher title, not just an adjunct to competitive scores. A Title is a tribute to the dog that bears it, a way to honor that dog, an ultimate memorial. It will remain in the record and in the memory for about as long as anything in this world can remain. Few humans will do as well or better in that regard, and though the dog himself doesn't know or care that his achievements have been noted, a Title says many things in the world of humans, where such things count.

A Title says your dog was intelligent, and adaptable, and good natured. It says that your dog loved you enough to do the things that please you, however crazy they may have sometimes seemed. And a Title says that you loved your dog, that you loved to spend time with him because he was a good dog, and that you believed in him enough to give him yet another chance when he failed, and that in the end your faith was justified.

A Title proves that your dog inspired you to have the special relationship enjoyed by so few, that in the world of disposable creatures, this dog with a Title was greatly loved, and loved greatly in return. And when that dear short life is over, the Title remains as a memorial of the finest kind, the best you can give to a deserving friend, volumes of praise in one small set of initials before or after the name.

A Title is nothing less than love and respect, given and received, permanently recorded.

The Last Battle

Beyond the Rainbow

As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played,

I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade.

I saw a wondrous image then of a place that’s trouble-free,

Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity.

I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side

Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be!

My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new

I wanted to run with them, but I had something left to do.

The Price We Pay

There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals.

It is a cycle unlike any other.

To those who have never lived through it's turnings and walked it's rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with the full knowledge it will be broken seems incomprehensible.

Only we know how small price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given.
