Ain't it Great!

Teddy had his eighth birthday with me just a few weeks ago on 6 April, it seems hardly possible that the first birthday he had with me was already five years ago, during our first COVID lockdown.

We had a little party with cookies and presents. We got the birthday photos done pretty quickly, perhaps Teddy is finally understanding that the photo taking will be done sooner if he looks at the camera.

We had the party in the morning as it was kind of cold and wet as has most of this Spring been. It did get nicer in the afternoon so we went to the Cumberland Heritage Village Museum for a special walk. The museum is closed until the May long weekend but you can still walk the grounds.

Teddy has an interdigital cyst between two of his toes on his left hind leg. He's on the fourth course of antibiotics since Christmas. The vet says sometimes they are hard to get rid of as it has to do with the structure of their paws and rubbing between the toes when they walk. It comes up just like a blood blister, then it bursts and then we have to keep the open sore clean. Teddy has been wearing a collar each time they cyst bursts and he's also been wearing boots when it's wet outside. We'll see the vet again before this round of antibiotics are finished. It's healed up again pretty nicely but it did each of the other times too.

It doesn't seem to bother Teddy much when he walks but without the cone he does lick the wound. Poor boy, he can't do the stairs with the cone on. I do take it off if he wants to come upstairs with me at night but usually he only decides he wants to come up after I've gotten in bed.

Well, it ain't great that Teddy has the cyst but it is great that he's eight.  Hoping there's better health and a few more birthdays in his future.

How Did That Happen?

It was Liam's 4th birthday this week on 4 June.  I no longer have a puppy, well really, I haven't had a puppy for a while. I'm starting to get puppy fever but with costs rising, two is all that I really can afford. Liam had his annual health check-up on his birthday and that visit with no shots was $125.

After his vet visit, I took Liam shopping; we went to PetSmart for canned dog food and then to Pet Valu for him to pick out some birthday presents. The owner of that Pet Valu store has Liam's litter brother. Then it was home to celebrate with Teddy.

I had made extra pupcakes when I made Teddy's, so it was just a matter of putting on some decorations, Greek yogurt and blueberries. They each got one after the requisite photos were done. Liam ate his whole; Teddy needed his broken up a bit. I think they both enjoyed them.

We wait for so many things, holidays, vacations, the weekend and just like that they're over and we say "how did that happen?" We have to remember to take time and enjoy the now.

Happy Birthday Liam, here's to many more!

Seventh Heaven

Teddy turned seven years old yesterday. He's now been with me longer than anyone else. For those who don't know, Teddy belonged to a friend's cousin but sadly there was allergy issues, so he moved around to various family members. He was living with my friends when I lost Beckett, and they contacted me to see if I would take Teddy. At first, I said no, but about a month later, I changed my mind. Teddy came on a trial on 9 Mar 2020 and then COVID lockdowns hit, and Teddy stayed. He probably would have anyway. We celebrated his third birthday in lockdown.

I made peanutbutter oat cakes for Teddy's birthday. The batter for this recipe is very dry so the cakes crumbled quite a bit. If I was to make them again, I would add yogurt to the batter to moisten it up. The cakes are topped with yogurt and bacon.

Of course, Teddy also got presents for his birthday. I had to go up to the pet store for wet dog food and one of Teddy's favourite things was on sale.

We did the table pictures first, then Teddy and Liam each got a pupcake. Afterwards, Teddy got to open his gifts.

Teddy was pretty cooperative about looking at the camera, so I didn't have a whole bunch of outtakes.

Then it was time to try out the favourite toy, a big Chuckit ball. Teddy came with a smaller one of these balls and he loves them. And of course, Liam loves it too.

I think Teddy had a good birthday. I hope he thinks he's in seventh heaven. I always wonder if he misses his people. Happy Birthday Teddy, here's to many more.

Teddy is Six!

We're a day early celebrating Teddy's sixth birthday but what else is there to do on a cold wet freezing rain kind of day.

I had already made some pumpkin pupcakes earlier in the week and had taken some out of the freezer this morning to thaw for tomorrow. But since I didn't get my errands done today, I decided we'd celebrate today.  I quickly made potato buttercream icing for the pupcakes and we had our little pawty.

Teddy is not too thrilled about wearing a party hat or posing for pictures but he's a sport about it all. He waits until I'm done taking pictures to get excited about getting a pupcake and presents.

In addition to the pupcake, Teddy got a new bumper and some treats. He got more treats than I planned to buy as how could I resist buying treats called Teddy Treats.

The boys also got new collars but really, they're for Easter. I don't know why I bother; you can never really see the collar with long Sheltie fur.

So now Teddy has had more birthdays with me than with anyone else. I hope he likes it here with me. You always wonder what they think about.

Happy Barkday Teddy!

Dinosaur and a Visit with family and friends

On 25 Jun, we headed to Dinosaur Provincial Park, it's only about 50 km from Brooks, Alberta so we only had a short drive that day. It's wise to bring all that you need with you when going to Dinosaur as there isn't much close by; the camp store does have the basics though.  Dinosaur Prov Park is in what they call the Badlands and has more fossils than are to be found in the badlands up near Drumheller where the Royal Tyrell Museum is found. The nice thing about Dinosaur is that it is a small park so if you don't have a lot of time you won't feel like you've missed out. You have to go on guided tours to see where the fossil beds are but there is quite a bit of the park that is open to hikers and, who knows, you might just find some dinosaur bones.

We left Tillebrook before lunch so still arrived at Dinosaur before well before check in. There were no signs that you had to wait in the parking lot so after pulling up and going in to check in, where they told us to turn around and wait in the parking lot, we just drove  to our sites as we knew our sister was already on her site had printed out our reservations.

Sharing campsites
We had three campsites all adjacent to one another and the night after we arrived a friend and her husband would join us. They were lucky enough to get a site right behind us for three nights.

There is a three kilometer road that you can drive around in the park; there are trails off it to view some dinosaur fossils. We drove that route one day, as well as hiked one of the trails and also went to the small museum at the visitors center.

We left Dinosaur on 29 Jun to head to Airdrie where my sister lives. My youngest sister and her husband went to stay at her daughter's place in Airdrie and I followed my sister and her brother in law back to Airdrie to her place. We would stay in Airdrie for just over three weeks. During this time we would meet with family and friends. We would meet my newest great neice who was born on my mother's birthday. A friend of mine from Victoria, BC would also come for a short visit.

While in Airdrie, we visited a little local museum and the Military Museums. We also went to a horse show at Spruce Meadows and went to walk around the Calgary Stampede. My friend and I also drove out to Banff and to Johnston's Canyon.

The drive out to Banff was really nice. I got the idea of going to Johnston Canyon from a Facebook post by someone in the Girl Camper group. Glad that she posted or I never would have known to go there. Johnston Canyon is quite a popular hike so it is rather crowded; it's two waterfalls but we only hiked to the first fall. That's only about a one kilometer hike on a paved pathway. The trail is dog friendly but since the trail is narrow if your dog isn't good with other dogs I wouldn't recommend taking them. We had  nice hike up the first waterfall and then drove back into Banff to walk around and have lunch.

It was a nice break to spend time with family. We had BBQ's, celebrated birthdays, went shopping, to the zoo and the dogs got lots of walk on the neighbourhood walkways.

But good times come to an end and all too soon it was time to start our journey back east. The journey back including travel out of the country for the first time in nearly two years will be the next installment.
